1. Educational Qualification & Eligible Disciplines

Candidates must possess a Full Time B.E. / B.Tech / B.Sc. (Engg.) degree from a recognized University/Institute in one of the following discipline combinations :

• Engineer Trainee (Electrical) : Electrical, Electrical (Power), Electrical and Electronics, Power Systems Engineering, or Power Engineering (Electrical).

• Engineer Trainee (Electronics) : Electronics, Electronics & Communication, Electronics & Telecommunication, Electronics & Electrical, or Telecommunication Engineering.

• Engineer Trainee (Civil) : Civil Engineering.

• Engineer Trainee (Computer Science) : Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Technology.

2. Percentage of Marks Required

• General / OBC (NCL) / EWS : Minimum 60% marks or equivalent CGPA in aggregate across all semesters/years.

• SC / ST / PwBD : The qualifying marks in essential qualifications are relaxed to "pass marks" for posts reserved for the respective category/PwBD category.

• Final Year / Semester Students : Final-year or final-semester students are eligible to apply if they expect their final results by 14 August, 2026, provided they have obtained at least 60% marks (or equivalent CGPA) in aggregate of all semesters/years up to the pre-final examination.

3. Eligibility Criteria (GATE 2026 & Age)

• GATE 2026 Score : Candidates must have a valid score and have appeared/qualified in the corresponding GATE 2026 paper (EE for Electrical, EC for Electronics, CE for Civil, CS for Computer Science). Scores from GATE 2025 or prior are not valid.   

• Upper Age Limit : 28 years as on 31 December, 2025.   

• Age Relaxations :

  • OBC (NCL) : 3 years (for posts reserved for the category).

  • SC / ST : 5 years (for posts reserved for the category).

  • PwBD : 10 years for UR/EWS; 13 years for OBC (NCL); 15 years for SC/ST (for posts reserved for the respective category).

  • Ex-Servicemen / Victims of riots : As per Government of India directives.

4. Work Experience Requirement

• No prior experience is required : This is a recruitment drive specifically for fresh Engineering Graduates through GATE-2026 who will undergo a one-year training program as Engineer Trainees.

How to Apply?

• Step 1: Register and Appear for GATE 2026 – Register and appear for the corresponding paper of GATE 2026 (EE, EC, CE, or CS) within the specified GATE dates.

• Step 2: Check Detailed Notification – Read the separate detailed notification regarding exact vacancies, reservations, and application instructions to be hosted on the POWERGRID website in February/March 2026.

• Step 3: Online Registration – Visit the CAREER section of the official POWERGRID website (www.powergrid.in) during the tentative February/March 2026 application window.

• Step 4: Fill Application Form – Register online by providing your GATE 2026 Application Number, GATE 2026 Registration Number, and other required personal and academic details.

• Step 5: Pay Application Fee – Deposit the non-refundable application fee of Rs. 500/- through online mode (SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-SM/Departmental candidates are exempted).

• Step 6: Submit and Retain Documents – Submit the application online to complete the process and retain your GATE 2026 Admit Card and Score Card for subsequent selection stages.

Selection Process

• Step 1 : Appear for GATE 2026 – Eligible candidates must register, appear, and qualify in the corresponding paper of GATE 2026 (EE, EC, CE, or CS).

• Step 2 : Shortlisting for Group Discussion & Interview – Candidates are short-listed category-wise based on their normalized marks out of 100 in the corresponding GATE 2026 paper, and may have to undergo psychometric assessment.

• Step 3 : Group Discussion and Personal Interview – Shortlisted candidates must appear for the Group Discussion (which carries no qualifying marks) and the Personal Interview.

• Step 4 : Qualify the Interview – Candidates must meet the minimum qualifying percentage in the Personal Interview (40% for Unreserved/EWS; 30% for OBC(NCL)/SC/ST/PwBD for reserved posts).

• Step 5 : Final Score Calculation – Final merit and empanelment are determined based on a weighted score: 85% for GATE 2026 normalized marks, 3% for Group Discussion, and 12% for the Personal Interview.

• Step 6 : Pre-Employment Medical Examination & Offer – Selected candidates in order of merit must clear a pre-employment medical examination to receive an offer of appointment.
