People these days feel constant tiredness. It lingers through the day, slowing movement, dulling focus, and making even simple tasks feel like a burden. While modern life, with its stress and endless schedules, plays its part, experts caution that fatigue may not always be as obvious as it seems.
“People often overlook nutritional deficiencies as a cause of fatigue,” Dr Chhya Vaja, Internal Medicine Expert, Apollo Spectra Mumbai, tells Moneycontrol.
“Even with adequate rest, the body may feel exhausted if it lacks essential nutrients,” she adds, and explains that these deficiencies are increasingly common. But they remain largely undetected until symptoms begin to interfere with daily life.
Symptoms of iron deficiency
Among the most common culprits, says Dr Vaja, is iron deficiency. “When iron levels drop, the body struggles to produce enough healthy red blood cells, often leading to anaemia,” she adds. The result is a familiar mix of weakness, breathlessness, and persistent fatigue. “Many patients dismiss these signs as general tiredness. But they may point to something more serious,” warns the expert.
Symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency
Equally concerning is vitamin B12 deficiency, particularly among vegetarians. This essential nutrient supports nerve function and energy production. “A lack of it can leave one feeling not just tired, but mentally foggy. Patients may report tingling sensations or difficulty concentrating,” says Dr Vaja and shares that these are early warning signs that should not be ignored.
Moreover, vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin, also plays a crucial role. Despite abundant sunlight, low levels are surprisingly widespread. “Fatigue, muscle weakness, and even low mood can follow. Magnesium, too, affects the body’s energy systems. A deficiency may lead to poor sleep and a constant sense of lethargy,” Dr Vaja says.
Folate deficiency
Then there is folate, another essential nutrient often overlooked. Its deficiency can contribute to anaemia and overall weakness. “There is still a lack of awareness. Many people continue to struggle in silence, unaware that a simple blood test could provide answers,” Dr Vaja says.
Lastly, she adds that one should not ignore persistent fatigue. “It is the body’s way of signalling that something may be missing. Timely medical advice, supported by the right tests, can uncover these hidden gaps and prevent further complications. Consult a doctor if fatigue persists,” advises Dr Vaja. She adds, “Appropriate supplements, along with a balanced diet rich in green leafy vegetables, fruits, dairy, nuts, and protein, can make a significant difference.” She also recommends at least 15 minutes of morning sunlight and regular health check-ups.
FAQs on Fatigue
1. Why do I feel tired even after a full night’s sleep?
Fatigue can persist despite good sleep if your body lacks essential nutrients like iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium or folate. These hidden deficiencies affect energy production and may cause weakness and lethargy.
2. How can nutritional deficiencies cause fatigue?
Low iron, B12, vitamin D, magnesium or folate reduce red blood cells, disturb nerve and muscle function, and impair sleep. This combination leaves you feeling constantly tired, weak, breathless or mentally foggy, even with adequate rest.
3. What symptoms suggest my fatigue is due to iron or B12 deficiency?
Iron deficiency may cause anaemia, weakness, breathlessness and persistent fatigue. Vitamin B12 deficiency often leads to tiredness, mental fog, tingling sensations and difficulty concentrating, especially in vegetarians.
4. When should I see a doctor about my fatigue?
If tiredness is persistent, interferes with daily life or is accompanied by weakness, breathlessness, tingling or low mood, consult a doctor. A simple blood test can detect deficiencies and guide appropriate treatment.
5. How can I manage fatigue linked to nutrient deficiencies?
Follow medical advice, take prescribed supplements, and eat a balanced diet with green leafy vegetables, fruits, dairy, nuts and adequate protein. Regular health check-ups and at least 15 minutes of morning sunlight can also support energy levels.
