India’s T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer’s post on X has gone viral on social media after the team’s thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20I on Saturday, October 24.
Iyer scored just seven before being bowled by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, who then dismissed Axar Patel for 11 to leave India struggling at 70/5 in the 11th over of their 181-run chase.
Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir revived India’s hopes with a 42-run partnership for the sixth wicket before the latter fell in the 15th over. Tilak then joined forces with Nitish Kumar Reddy to stitch together a match-winning, unbeaten 69-run stand for the seventh wicket, guiding India to the win.
“Job half done!” Iyer tweeted on Saturday evening.
Earlier, India delivered an improved bowling performance, but fifties from Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs helped New Zealand recover to post 180/5.
Phillips blasted 70 off 43 deliveries, while Jacobs scored 58 from 46 balls as the pair rescued New Zealand from a shaky start with a 116-run stand for the fourth wicket.
New Zealand were reduced to 41/3 in the sixth over after India’s bowlers made early inroads, but Phillips and Jacobs steadied the innings before shifting gears in the latter stages.
Star pacer Arshdeep Singh gave India an early breakthrough by dismissing Tim Seifert for seven in the second over.
Prince Yadav dismissed Finn Allen for 16 before Bhuvneshwar Kumar sent Daryl Mitchell back for just six, leaving New Zealand reeling at 18/2 before the end of the third over.
Allen’s dismissal in the sixth over left New Zealand at 41/3, forcing Phillips and Jacobs to steady the innings and rebuild the total.
The pair responded with a crucial partnership, taking New Zealand past 100 in the 14th over and laying the foundation for a strong finish.
India will take on New Zealand in the third T20I on Tuesday at the Hnry Stadium in Wellington.
