CJP's Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka to be released after 7 days in jail
A Special Executive Magistrate in Delhi has ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who have been in judicial custody since October 14 for entering and waving national flags in Jantar Mantar, which has been denotified as a designated protest site.
Now court has allowed the release of Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka who were detained, arrested on the 14th of October and have been since then in judicial custody in Tihar prison. The police had asked for three day extension of their judicial custody but the special executive magistrate has now allowed the release of Ashutosh Das and Saurabh Ranka after nine days of being in the Tihar prison on judicial custody. This is the latest news which is coming in at this moment. Remember the co-conveners of the Cockroach Janata Party, Saurabh Das, Ashutosh Ranka, were arrested by the police after they jumped into Jantar Mantar on 14th October with a tricolor. And then, of course, they were held in breach of their peace bond, which was signed by them. And first they given a five-day judicial custody and then it was later on 19th increased to two days that is 21st that is today now the court has allowed the release of Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka and today they went to the high court as well where they had to withdraw their petition where the court had in fact said that first the SEM the special executive magistrate take a view on their application only then you should approach the high Now the SC M Court has given them the go ahead to be released as far as their judicial custody is concerned. The Delhi police has asked for three more days of judicial custody. My colleague Srishti now joins me with more details. Srishti, after all the questions which were raised on the entire, the manner in which they were in judicial custody, a good news for both of them and the Cockroach Janta Party, the court has Has allowed their release. Well, yes, this is the latest update. The special executive magistrate here at Mandir Marg Police Station has allowed release of Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka after seven days of being in judicial custody. They were sent to JC for five days, and then it was eventually extended to two more days, as we saw. We just saw them leave in a police van. Now, what we are learning from our sources here also in the Delhi Police. is that they're released today from Tihar, however, is not likely because it has happened, the order is coming so late, they will have to be first taken as the procedure goes, they will have to be first taken back to Tihar jail. The order will have to go there and then eventually the formalities are taken care of at Tihar. That doesn't, release orders are usually not taken after 5pm, that's the time limit. So there's a possibility that they'll not be released, they're not likely to be released from Tihar today, but the court has definitely allowed their release. The reasons that have been given by the court is something we'll know once the auto copy comes out, but from what we know is that Delhi Police had sought a further extension of three days. The lawyers for Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka had a challenge that particular request on the last request. You to stay on with me. You know, Aneesh Gawande is joining me at this moment. Aneesh, good news for the Cokrajla Party and their supporters. Both of them have been, the court has allowed, the special executive magistrate court has allowed their release, though they are unlikely to be let out of the Tihar prison today. Ankit, a great day, not just for the CJP or for their supporters, but for democracy, right? I think what had transpired over the course of the last week was a farce. that fast has finally ended. I hope that their release from Tihar will be facilitated as soon as possible. I think I'm given to know by your channel itself that procedures for release from Tihar don't happen after 5:00 PM, but I can only hope to have both of them back together tomorrow and give both of them a very big hug. Anish, very quickly, is there a plan after this? Will this also then mean a regrouping of the top leadership of the CJP and then plan their next step? Of course, I think more than plan the next step, I think everyone just wants to see each other, right? Ashu's wife hasn't seen him in so long, she's been that stressed. I'm sure Saurav's mother is also keen to see him. All of their friends are very eager to meet them after seven days of being in a high security prison where... sort of high-profile criminals and terrorists are put in. So, but they went in smiling, they came to court today smiling, and their spirit seems to be unfazed. And so I think what has to be done next will be decided upon whether the government still believes that there is a fundamental right to protest. Thank you so much, Anish, for joining me. Congratulations to you, and of course, the entire CJP team will be very, very happy that, at least at last, after seven days of being in the Tihar Prison, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka, co-conveners of the CJP, have been allowed, you know, by the court to be released.
