PSG vs Arsenal FC match: PSG goalkeeper Safonov's wife makes Russian flag from plastic bags after stadium ban; watch video

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvei Safonov's wife drew attention ahead of the Champions League final after creating a Russian flag from plastic bags when spectators were not permitted to bring Russian flags into the stadium.

The gesture came as PSG retained the European title by defeating Arsenal 4-3 in a penalty shootout in a dramatic final in Budapest on Saturday. The match ended 1-1 after extra time before the French club prevailed from the spot.

PSG captain Marquinhos hailed the achievement of winning back-to-back titles, saying the team had embraced the challenge of defending the crown from the beginning of the season.

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes missed the decisive penalty, sending his effort over the bar and handing victory to PSG. The French club became only the second team in the modern era to successfully retain the trophy after Real Madrid.

Luis Enrique joins elite group

PSG coach Luis Enrique secured his third European Cup as a manager and joined an exclusive group of coaches with at least three continental titles. He said the success was particularly rewarding because of the difficulty of the challenge and described the triumph as deserved over the course of the season.

Final goes the distance

Arsenal took an early lead through Kai Havertz in the sixth minute and defended resolutely for much of the contest. PSG equalised through an Ousmane Dembele penalty in the 65th minute, forcing extra time in a final that eventually went to penalties.

Lucas Beraldo converted PSG's final spot kick before Gabriel's miss sparked celebrations among PSG players and supporters.
