Premier League to introduce direct-to-consumer streaming platform in Singapore

The Premier League announced the launch of its own streaming platform, Premier League Plus, which will begin in Singapore next season, according to chief executive Richard Masters.

If the initial rollout proves successful, the platform could be expanded globally, allowing the league to engage directly with its audience for the first time.

Details of the Streaming Platform

He further mentioned that the league aims to learn from this experience to understand how the platform might be implemented in other regions around the world.

Potential Impact on Viewership

This new streaming service could significantly alter how fans access content from one of the most popular football leagues globally, which claims a viewership of 1.87 billion across 189 countries.

Previously, the Premier League has sold its broadcasting rights to independent broadcasters, such as Sky Sports in the UK and NBC in the US. The anticipated platform has often been referred to in discussions as “Premflix.”

Additional Developments

Alongside the streaming service, the Premier League is establishing a new production hub, Premier League Studios, in London to support its content creation efforts.

Masters concluded, stating, “What we do with Premier League Plus in Singapore is really about learning as well as building the business. If it goes well, it may be replicated. You don’t want to predict further than that I think at this stage.”
