'Wake up Hindus': Bollywood celebs call out 'hypocrisy' as voices loud on Gaza stay silent on hate crime in Bangladesh

Several Indian celebrities have spoken out against what they describe as selective outrage, questioning why loud voices on Gaza have remained silent over recent hate crimes against Hindus in Bangladesh. Bollywood actresses Janhvi Kapoor and Kajal Aggarwal were among those who condemned the mob lynching of a Hindu man Dipu Chandra Das and highlighted growing attacks on the Hindu minority. Expressing concern over the deteriorating situation, celebrities pointed to reports of Islamist mobs targeting Hindus, vandalising shops, and setting homes on fire, urging people to acknowledge and speak up against violence regardless of ideology.

Dipu Chandra Das was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh city following allegations of blasphemy, leading to a massive outrage. The 30-year-old worked as a factory worker and was attacked by his co-workers after the allegations spread rapidly within the factory premises. An angry mob surrounded the victim and beat him severely, leading to his tragic death. The mob hung the dead body on a tree and set it on fire. Days later, another Hindu man was beaten to death by a mob in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district, raising fresh concerns over mob violence. Police said the incident occurred in Hosendanga village of Kalimohor union in Pangshaupazila, where the victim, identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was attacked over allegations of extortion.

In a post on Instagram, titled "Dipu Chandra Das", Janhvi Kapoor called it "hypocrisy" when such "inhumane and barbaric" acts fail to induce a response in support of those suffering.

"What is happening in Bangladesh is barbaric. It is slaughter, and it is not an isolated incident. If you don't know about his inhumane public lynching, read about it, see the videos, ask the questions. And if despite all of this you feel no rage, then it is exactly this kind of hypocrisy that will destroy us before we know it. We will continue to cry about things halfway across the globe while our own brothers and sisters are burnt to death (sic)," Janhvi Kapoor said.

She also stressed the need for calling out communal extremism. Janhvi wrote, "Communal discrimination and extremism in any and every form, whether we are the victims or the perpetrators - needs to be called out and condemned before we forget our humanity. We are pawns that believe we reside on either side of an invisible line. Recognise this. And equip yourself with knowledge so u can take a stand for the innocent lives that are continuously lost and terrorised in this communal crossfire.”

Jaya Prada Calls Out Attack On Hindus

Actor and former MP Jaya Prada expressed deep anguish and concern over the recent incident in Bangladesh, strongly condemning the violence and calling for collective action and justice.

"Today I am very unhappy, my heart is bleeding, thinking how such brutality can be done to a person in Bangladesh. An innocent Hindu person Dipu Chandra Das was lynched by a mob. They not only killed him, but set him on fire after tying him to a tree. Is this the new Bangladesh? It is not normal violence; it is a mob lynching. It is an attack on Hindu religion. Our temples are being demolished, the women are being attacked, how long will we be silent? We are silent on the name of secularism, we should raise our voices, we should help the people there... We should together try to seek justice for them," she said.
