Adani Group goes all in on AI with 100B data center strategy explained
In a move that has the potential to reshape India's digital future, the Adani Group said that it will invest $100 billion by 2035 to build renewable energy powered, AI ready data centers across the country. However, this isn't just about server rooms and cooling systems. According to the group, the $100 billion core investment could unlock an additional $150 billion in related sectors ranging from server manufacturing and electrical equipment to cloud services. That's a potential $250 billion AI infrastructure ecosystem over the next decade. At the center of it? A simple but powerful thesis. Group Chairman Gauta Madani says the nations that master the symmetry between energy and computing power will dominate the AI era. The plan is to build what Adani calls a comprehensive 5 layer AI stack focused on technological sovereignty that includes dedicated computing capacity for Indian large language models, national data projects and reserved infrastructure for AI startups, research institutions and tech entrepreneurs. In other words, not just global hyper scalers, but homegrown innovation. The announcement comes as New Delhi hosts the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the first such summit in the global S. Adani Group's plan also builds on the company's existing data center arm, Adani Connex, which already operates about two gigawatts of national capacity that is set to expand to five gigawatts in the coming years. Partnerships are already in motion with Google for a major AI data center campus in Vizag, with Microsoft in Hyderabad and Puna, and with Flipkart for a second AI Focus data center to power digital commerce. But data centers consume massive power. So where will the energy come from? The backbone is the 30 GW COVTA renewable energy project by A Donny Green Energy, one of the world's largest such projects. More than 10 gigawatts are already operational. On top of that, the group plans to invest another $55 billion in renewable capacity, including large scale battery storage. It also plans to work with leading academic institutions to launch specialized AI infrastructure engineering courses, applied research labs, and national fellowship programs, addressing a growing skills gap.
