Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, 90, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday morning after suffering a haemorrhage. Hospital officials confirmed that he was brought in around 8.30 am by his family physician, Dr Sandeep Chopra, following a sudden deterioration in his health.
According to an official statement issued by the hospital, Salim Khan was admitted under the care of Dr Jalil D. Parkar, Pulmonologist, Department of Chest Medicine. He was first taken to the emergency department and later shifted to the ICU for monitoring.
“It was not that he was critical”
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Dr Jalil Parkar clarified that contrary to reports circulating on some news channels, Khan was not in a critical condition.
“After seeing him in the casualty and giving him some medications, we realised he needed ICU hospitalisation and we took him to ICU. He was having jerks and his blood pressure was high, for which we treated him. We had to put him on the ventilator as a safeguard while certain investigations were carried out. It was not that he was critical, as reported on various news channels,” Dr Parkar said.
He further clarified that no surgery was performed. “There was no surgery performed. It was a procedure, which we usually do. Yes, he had a brain haemorrhage which was very minimal, which did not require any surgical intervention. There was no need of any surgery,” he added, describing the haemorrhage as “very minimal.”
“The procedure has been accomplished successfully”
On Wednesday, Khan underwent a DSA procedure performed by neurosurgeon Dr Nitin Dange.
“The procedure, called DSA, has been accomplished successfully. He is fine, stable, and being shifted back to the ICU. By tomorrow, if all goes well, and God wishes, he will be off the ventilator. All in all, he is doing quite well. Age is a factor and we understand, that is why the process of recovery takes a little time,” Dr Parkar said.
A team of specialists, including neurologist Dr Vinay Chavan, cardiologist Dr Ajit Menon, neurosurgeon Dr Nitin Dange and Dr Bineet Ahluwalia, attended to the veteran screenwriter following his hospitalisation.
