Several people were rushed to hospital Saturday afternoon after a canopy partially collapsed amid severe thunderstorm conditions at Kendrick Family Ball Park in Morgantown, West Virginia.
So, what exactly happened? A canopy positioned on a hillside near the ballpark, known locally as Randy's Ridge, partially blew over during a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in Monongalia County, injuring multiple people. A 12 News employee on the scene reported seeing at least three ambulances respond to the incident.
MECCA 911 confirmed to 12 News that multiple people were transported to hospital and that the incident had been officially classified as a mass casualty event. No further details on the number or condition of those injured were immediately provided.
“Obviously it was a very scary situation and scene when the storm got going,” said Metronews sports reporter Greg Carey, as per a report from WAJR. “It did not last very long, but it was in full force, and you could see multiple tents and canopies flying into the air and people basically trying to hold on for dear life, essentially," he added.
Where It Happened
Randy's Ridge is a hillside area overlooking the ballpark that had drawn thousands of fans over the past week as a free vantage point to watch (West Virginia University) WVU compete in the postseason. The spot had become a popular gathering place.
The Game Was Already Delayed
The severe weather had already forced a lightning delay on the game just after 3 p.m. Saturday. Play resumed less than two hours later, but not before the storm had caused significant harm to spectators gathered on the hillside above the stadium.

“We were just all sitting there looking at the baseball field, watching the wind blow and stuff, next thing we know, we hear the other big tent on the outside moving, and it started pushing us, and then it was just pretty much everybody protecting each other,” said James Sanders, who was sitting near the tent when it collapsed, as per a report from WAJR.
“It was probably only 30 seconds, but it was just pushing us over the hill," he added.
