Anushka Sharma’s homeopathy post sparks backlash, the liver doctor calls her ‘illiterate celeb’

Actress Anushka Sharma has found herself at the centre of a heated online debate after sharing a post in support of homeopathy. What began as a personal note on her health journey soon turned into a larger conversation around alternative medicine, celebrity influence and the responsibility public figures carry while discussing healthcare.

The controversy began when Anushka re-shared a video featuring well-known homeopathic physician Dr Rajan Sankaran in conversation with entrepreneur and Shark Tank India judge Namita Thapar. Along with the video, Anushka wrote that homeopathy had played an important role in her life and credited Dr Sankaran as a key part of that journey.

“Homeopathy played an important role in my life and Dr Rajan Sankaran has been a key part of that journey. I deeply value his insights on health and mindful living,” she wrote.

The video itself focused on the idea of integrated medicine. During the discussion, Dr Sankaran argued that homeopathy should not be seen as being in competition with modern medicine, but as part of a broader healthcare ecosystem. He said, “Homeopathy doesn’t treat conditions, it treats people. By treating people it heals them. By healing the human, their pathology also heals. Homeopathy can treat everybody. But can it cure everybody? Like every system it has limitations.”

He further added that modern medicine also has limitations in certain long-term conditions and said that some doctors refer patients for homeopathy in cases like allergies, eczema and multiple sclerosis. His larger point was that the discussion should not be about superiority or inferiority, but about understanding the strengths and limitations of every medical system.

However, Anushka’s repost did not go down well with a section of social media users. Many criticised the actor for promoting homeopathy, calling it unscientific and misleading. Others defended her, saying she had only spoken about her personal experience and had not asked anyone to avoid conventional treatment.

The strongest reaction came from hepatologist Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, popularly known as The Liver Doc, who has often spoken against alternative medical practices that he considers unscientific. Reacting sharply to the video and Anushka’s post, he called out Rajan Sankaran, Namita Thapar and Anushka Sharma, referring to them as a “triangle of shame.”

He wrote, “Supplement Seller – Legalized Quack – Illiterate Celeb,” while criticising the endorsement. In another post, he claimed that homeopathy is made of “water, alcohol, and sugar,” adding that people are paying premium prices for “fancy sugar pills containing precisely no medicine at all.”

The backlash has once again reignited the long-standing debate around homeopathy in India. While supporters argue that it has helped them personally, critics insist that public figures should be more careful before endorsing medical systems that remain controversial in scientific circles.

Anushka Sharma has not issued any further clarification on the matter so far.
