Actor Sharib Hashmi, widely known for playing JK Talpade, Srikant Tiwari's sidekick in Raj & DK's The Family Man, recently opened up about his life away from the screen. In a conversation with Hauterrfly, Sharib appeared with his wife, Nasreen Hashmi, as the couple spoke about their journey together and the health battle their family has been dealing with for years.
Nasreen, a five-time survivor of oral cancer, has been fighting the disease since she was diagnosed in 2018. During the conversation, the couple spoke about the emotional impact of the diagnosis, the repeated relapses, and the way they have stood by each other through treatment, surgeries and hospital stays.
What they said about the diagnosis
Nasreen said Sharib had completely broken down when he first learnt about her diagnosis. Sharib then spoke about the course of her treatment and the nature of the illness, saying it had returned several times and was being treated again.
He said, "She has undergone the surgery five times now. She has relapsed five times. It has come back for the sixth time. This time it has spread everywhere. This shall pass too, the treatment is going on. Jis tareeke se ye deal kar rahi thi usse hum sab ko himmat fir milne lagi. Uska jo cancer hain kaafi aggressive nature ka hain isliye itni baar relapse hota hain lekin uske bawajood bhi ye kaafi himmat ke saath ussey deal karti hain. Fight karti hain [The way she was dealing with it gave all of us the courage to stay strong again. Her cancer is quite aggressive in nature, which is why it keeps relapsing so often, but despite that, she faces it with immense courage. She keeps fighting]."
His remarks underlined both the seriousness of Nasreen's condition and the way her response to it has given strength to those around her. The couple's conversation stayed focused on the reality of the illness, the ongoing treatment, and the resilience required to face it repeatedly.
Nasreen on Sharib's support
Nasreen also spoke about the support she received from Sharib through every phase of her treatment. She described him as a constant presence during hospital stays, saying he remained by her side even when work commitments pulled him elsewhere.
She said, "He didn't leave my side. Even if there was a shoot, and he was busy, he still managed and reached the hospital. From the time we were in hospital, till discharge, he would take his bag and sit there. He would not move. Constantly, him being there used to feel very good to me. That he is there for me. That was comforting. In many ways he has been there."
he conversation brought out not only the medical struggle but also the comfort and reassurance Nasreen said she found in his presence.
Their journey together
Sharib Hashmi married Nasreen Hashmi on December 27, 2003. The couple have two children, a girl and a boy. They met as teenagers and have been together for over three decades, making their conversation as much about a long relationship as about the health crisis they have been navigating since 2018.
