Cristiano Ronaldo exits Portugal camp! Sister slams lack of respect amid controversy

Legendary player Cristiano Ronaldo left the Portuguese national team during the Copenhagen training camp, sparking a massive controversy ahead of the Nations Cup. Ronaldo announced on social media that he has decided to quit the national team camp after speaking with Pedro Proenca, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation. Ronaldo promised to tell the whole story of the incident and to tell the truth when the moment was right. However, European media outlets have already begun providing insider information about the situation, outlining what happened between Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus, the manager of Portugal, and the head of the federation. The dramatic development has rekindled intense debate regarding the veteran forward's place in the national setup and his rapport with the coaching staff.

"After the National Team Coach's press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I made the decision to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell the truth to all Portuguese people about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself. Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception," Ronaldo wrote on social media.

What Sparked The Turmoil In The Portugal Camp?

The issue started during Portugal's UEFA Nations League play against Norway, according to Portuguese media. Ronaldo was listed on the bench of substitutes after playing against Wales a few days before. Despite spending time warming up in the second half, the manager's plans were altered by the way the game played out. In the end, head coach Jorge Jesus decided not to utilise Ronaldo at all, leaving him on the bench for the full 90 minutes. Goncalo Ramos played brilliantly up front, scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-1 triumph. At the final whistle, Ronaldo walked straight down the tunnel rather than joining his teammates to thank the spectators, clearly irritated by the paucity of playing time.

Pedro Proenca, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, travelled to Scandinavia to have an urgent face-to-face discussion with both Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus as media speculation and tensions increased. After the talks, Jorge Jesus addressed the media, downplaying reports of a serious rift and insisting that he had complete control over team selection.

However, as per a Marca report, Ronaldo felt differently about the way the incident was handled, and this public stance rekindled the friction. Soon after, Ronaldo declared that he was quitting the training camp, wishing his teammates well and casting doubt on his future with the national team. With Ronaldo making a cryptic pledge to disclose the whole reason behind his departure when the time is right, the scenario has increased the likelihood of an international retirement.

Ronaldo's Sister Adds Fuels To Rift Rumours

Elma Aveiro, Ronaldo's sister, expressed her opinion that her brother has been mistreated. Following this most recent incident, Aveiro openly implied that many Portuguese national team teammates did not respect Ronaldo.

"CR7 deserved more respect as the national team deserved more structure… and Portuguese journalism deserved more competence and less speculation. As for the Portuguese people, well… they don't deserve to have the best at anything," Aveiro wrote on Instagram.

"We are envious, disdainful, ignorant, and we deserve to return to the mediocrity we always had in football before Cristiano. Thank you for everything, CR7! You deserved more," she added.
