The recent graduate succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 3 after the crash occurred early on Aug. 2, leaving his family, teammates and community mourning the loss of a young athlete widely praised for his character and leadership.

Metcalf had earned both academic and athletic scholarships and was preparing to join the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils this fall. Instead of celebrating the next chapter of his life, those closest to him are remembering the impact he made long before he reached the college field.

Who was Caleb Metcalf?

Caleb Metcalf was a standout wide receiver at Flushing High School, where he excelled in the classroom and on the football field. He graduated as a member of the Class of 2026 and was set to begin classes at Lawrence Technological University, where he planned to study biomedical engineering or another science-related field while continuing his football career.

Lawrence Tech head coach Oscar Olejniczak remembered Metcalf as someone who connected with everyone around him. "Caleb was one of those guys that, to be very honest, I know it sounds cliche, but everybody liked. He got along with everybody," the coach said. He added, "It didn't matter who you were. He could get along with you... He loved his mother and his siblings very, very much."

Caleb Metcalf's cause of death

Caleb Metcalf died after the accident. The fatal crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 2 in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Police said the vehicle, carrying five adult men, left the roadway, crashed through the wall of a residential garage and came to rest inside it.

Metcalf, who was riding in the rear seat, was ejected from the vehicle and found partially underneath it. He was taken to Hurley Medical Center but died from his injuries the following day. No other occupants were injured, and the investigation is ongoing.

In a statement shared through Flushing football coach Austin Cook, Metcalf's family reflected on the dream he had worked so hard to achieve.

"He graduated from Flushing High School as a member of the Class of 2026, where he excelled both in the classroom and on the football field, earning honor roll recognition and both academic and athletic scholarships," the family said.

They continued, "This week, he was set to begin the next chapter of his life at Lawrence Technological University on a full football scholarship... He was a natural leader with an amazing heart, someone who cared deeply for his family, his friends, and his teammates. He was loved by so many, and the joy, kindness, and strength he brought into our lives will never be forgotten."

Caleb Metcalf's college mourns his death

Flushing Community Schools Superintendent Matt Shanafelt described Metcalf as "a tremendous young man, a humble and quiet leader, a talented and hardworking student athlete with a bright future."

He added, "His smile was contagious, he loved life, and he was a bright light in the lives of so many. Our hearts go out to Caleb's family, friends, classmates, coaches, teachers, and all that know and love him." The district also announced grief counselors would be available for students and graduates following the tragedy.
