Novak Djokovic hit with Wimbledon punishment after 5-hour marathon win over Felix Auger Aliassime
Novak Djokovic pulled off a great win over Felix Auger-Aliassime to qualify for the Wimbledon semifinal. The Serb struggled with fitness issues but came out on top to win 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 to keep hopes of a 25th Grand Slam alive. On the eve of the stunning win, Djokovic, however, was handed a blow by Wimbledon.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion was fined £5,600 for audible obscenity. The moment that triggered the fine wasn't clarified, but it could have occurred during Novak Djokovic's win over Roman Safiullin. The 39-year-old received a formal warning from the umpire after swearing a string of Serbian expletives after being broken for 2-0 in the third set. Djokovic also lost his cool in the third set after he had to leap out of the way following a forehand by Safillun. He then picked up a spare ball and smashed it away.
Who Will Novak Djokovic Face At Wimbledon Semifinal?
Novak will now take on nemesis Jannik Sinner in the semifinal. Sinner has dominated Novak in recent years, but the Serb got the better of the World No.1 earlier this year at the Australian Open. Jannik Sinner has also not looked at his very best, losing to Juan Cerundolo in the second round at the French Open, and giving a lot of break points at Wimbledon. The previous opponents failed to capitalise, but Sinner can't afford that against a veteran like Novak. On paper, Sinner will enter the game as the favourite, but Novak Djokovic should have an even chance to win.
What Did Djokovic Say About His Win Over Felix Auger Aliassime
Djokovic was delighted after the win and said that wins like these are the moments he plays tennis for.
“These are the kind of moments that I still play tennis for.”
“I’m still able to battle these young guys that have 15 years less than me,” Djokovic said. “I’m able to beat them at the tightest possible scoreline. … In a sense, it is really a nice surprise. But at the same time, I always have the highest expectations for myself.”
