The 6-year-old girl had been living in jail just days after she was born, not because she had committed a crime, but because her father was serving a prison sentence and her mother died of joint-disease when Khushi was just 15 days old. With no one else to care for her, she was brought to Bilaspur Central Jail with her father. By 2019, the jail had become the only world she knew. She spent her days around the women inmates, growing up within those walls with just one dream to get a chance to attend a good school. Then District Collector and IAS Officer Sanjay Kumar Alam visited the jail. During the inspection, he noticed Khushi playing with other inmates. He wanted to know how a little girl had ended up living inside a prison. So he asked about her family and then he asked her what she wanted to do in her life. She had just one wish, I want to study in a school. That answer stayed with Alam. She spoke to the jail administration and began looking for a way to move Khushi out of the prison and into a school. Chand international school in Bilaspur came forward to support her education and accommodation while a caretaker was also arranged for her initially. For Khushi, this meant living behind the only life she had known. She was finally able to leave the jail and start school where she could study, play with other children and experience a normal childhood.
