Why is Sawan dedicated to Lord Shiva? Know spiritual reason behind Sawan fasting

The Sawan month is the most sacred for Hindus. During this month, devotees observe fast with great devotion and pray to Lord Shiva to receive his immense blessings. Sawan or Shravan generally falls in July and August. This year, it is beginning on July 30th, 2026 and will end on August 28th, 2026.

This month also includes many festivals such as Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi. This month is also considered auspicious for beginning something new, as devotees are believed to receive blessings from Lord Shiva himself.

Let's understand in detail why this month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and why people observe fast.

Sawan 2026: How Is The Month Of Sawan Associated With Lord Shiva?

There are two legends associated with this.

According to the Vishnu Purana, during Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean, fourteen gems emerged. Out of these thirteen gems were divided between Gods and demons, but the fourteenth was the deadly poison(Halahal) that no one wanted to take. It was believed that this poison could destroy mankind. So to prevent this, Lord Shiva drank the poison. After this incident, he came to be known as 'Neelkanth', the one with the blue throat.

Although Lord Shiva consumed the poison, it generated extreme heat in his body. To cool its effect, all the gods started pouring sacred water(Gangajal), milk, yogurt, and honey over him to bring him relief from the heating effect.

This incident is said to have happened in the month of Sawan, which is why this month is dedicated to him. This act of Lord Shiva symbolises his selfless love towards his devotees.

Whereas, according to the Shiva Purana, this is the time when Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati.
